'We Care' packages for soldiers

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Friends of Annie Trail of McCook, Nebraska, (center) fill "We Care" packages for American soldiers at FBO (Fixed Base Operation) Orgun-e, FBO Boris and COP (Combat Outpost) Zerok, all in Afghanistan. A third of the 60 boxes will be sent to Zerok, Annie said. "That's where my heart is. There are only about 200 soldiers, and they're way up in the mountains. They have a tough time getting mail because the weather is so bad." Annie and her corps of volunteers packed heavy sox, hand and foot warmers, beef jerky, sunflower seeds, game books, razors, popcorn, snack bars, nuts, wipes, hot chocolate mix, individual packages of macaroni and cheese. Volunteers will add all kinds of candy, about 60 pounds of which have been traded from trick-or-treaters and then donated by Dr. Jesse Neal DDS of Alma. Annie said she continues to accept donations of items to generate at least another 40 boxes before Christmas. Annie said that a bake sale by McCook National Bank employees raised about $800, which she will add to other monetary donations to pay for postage. This is the fourth year of "Project Grannie Annie." Contact Annie at (308) 340-3578 to make donations. Annie's volunteers Saturday morning included her husband, Dick, and, on Annie's right, Paula Yeager; and, sealing boxes, Pam Dorothy and Kim Parde.
