June Rose Hoagland

June 10, 1919 -- Feb. 14, 2011

WATSONVILLE, California -- June passed away Feb. 14, 2011, in Watsonville after a short illness.

She was born June 10, 1919, in McCook, Nebraska, one of seven sisters and one brother to Margaret [Dietz] and William M. Brehm.

She is survived by daughter, Patricia and husband, Donald Spence of Watsonville; son, Robert and wife, Sue Hoagland of Orangevale, California; and her sister, Eleanor Hiersekorn of Casa Grande, Arizona; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

June was predeceased by Lloyd W. Hoagland, her husband of 65 years in 2001; daughters, Beatrice Lichtenstein in 2010, and Evelyn in 1943.

June and Lloyd lived in McCook and raised their young family there until 1942. Lloyd received training in aircraft sheet metal training under the Works Projects Administration (W.P.A.), a federal program employing millions after the Great Depression to carry out public works projects and provide much needed employment skills and training. The training enabled the Hoagland family to move to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where Lloyd worked modifying B17 bombers for the World War II effort. June also worked at the Cheyenne Maintenance base for a short time.

In 1948, Lloyd was transferred to the United Air Lines South San Francisco Maintenance base in California. The family lived in East Palo Alto and later Menlo Park until 1962 when Lloyd and June moved to Watsonville and purchased the Star Motel, which they owned until their retirement in 1972.

While in Watsonville, June was active in the Business and Professional Woman's Club, the Fifth Street Senior Center and Meadows Mobile Manor community where she was an avid bingo player and a Grey Bears volunteer.

For many years after retirement, June enjoyed traveling the Midwest and West Coast happily visiting extended family relatives while Lloyd researched both their family's genealogy. The travels resulted in the publishing of Descendants of Johann Heinrich Brehm and Heinrich Dietz on June's side of the family and Descendants of John Clark of New Haven on Lloyd's family.

No service or memorials will be held.

Cremation will be followed by interment in McCook Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook. Herrmann Funeral Home of McCook is in charge of local arrangements, which are pending.
