Aug. 7, 1922-Aug. 18, 2009

WILSONVILLE, Nebraska -- Ona was born to William and Edna Carfield Aug. 7,1922 at their rural home near the Red Willow-Decatur County line. Growing up, she attended school in Danbury, Nebraska where she also played second base on the softball team and worked cleaning houses for various people.

She had originally inspired to become a teacher but along the way she met and fell in love with a tall, slender fellow named Bernie James Scrivner. The couple were married Aug. 29, 1942.

He joined the Army, so the young couple's early days were spent in Big Springs, Texas and Liberal, Kansas. After that, the couple settled in Lyle, Kansas, where they farmed, raised cattle, and made their home.

In the early '60s, they bought the 36 Motel in Norton, Kansas which they successfully ran, but Lyle was still home so a few years later they moved back to their farm.

She was an active member of the Lyle Methodist Church, the Liberty Star Club, the Women's Society for Christian Service (WSCS), the American Legion Auxiliary, and other organizations. She taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, and was a 4-H Club leader.

In the late '70s, after her husband's passing, she bought a home in Oberlin, Kansas where she worked at the Good Samaritan Home.

Upon retiring in 1991, she moved to Missouri where her children both lived. While in Missouri, she invested much of her time and love in her three youngest granddaughters and her two oldest great-grandsons; teaching them how to fly a kite, going on long walks, and playing ball. No matter what the activity, she encouraged them every step of the way.

She was a worker her whole life and retirement to her didn't mean it was time to sit down and just become an observer. She participated. There was always some task to accomplish or some get-together to get ready for. If she was sitting down, she was either writing letters or reading.

She continued to subscribe to the newspapers "back home" and she was a history buff, so she always had something interesting to read in her spare time.

In 2001, she moved into Brookview Care Facility where she participated in numerous crafts and activities and thoroughly enjoyed the live music that they frequently had there. She had family close and enjoyed visiting and numerous outings with her family.

On Aug. 18, 2009, she left this world at the age of 87, much loved and now much missed.

She had 11 siblings, Kenneth, Micky, Agnes, Margie, Elma, Elmer, Elenora, Pauline, Franky, Billy and Charollette; numerous nieces and nephews; two children, Lynn and Martha; five grandchildren, Sherri, TJ, Sage, Chelsey, Sondra; and, to date, 11 great-grandchildren, Andrew, Robert, Zachery, Zoe, Jarin James, Sarah, Faith, Brock, Hope, Robert Everett and Bella.

A service to honor and celebrate her life will be in Wilsonville on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Remembrance service and fellowship at the Lyle Community Center will follow immediately thereafter.
