OBERLIN -- Leroy Wessel, 80, died Thursday (Feb. 11, 2010) at Oberlin.

He was born April 25, 1929, in Thomas County, Kan., to Joseph Francis Wessel and Mary Elizabeth Mindrup. He grew up near Angelus in Thomas County, Kan., and attended country schools prior to serving in the U.S. Army.

On May 25, 1963, he married Joan Ann Ryan in Osborne. He lived in Victoria, Oakley, Benkelman and Selden. He was a carpenter.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus in Selden.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan in 2009; his parents, Joseph and Mary Wessel; and siblings Ambrose, Leo, Frank and Helen Nuessen.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph Wessel of Satanta and John Wessel of Carbondale; three daughters, Floy Wessel of Emporia, Pamela Wessel of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Rebecca Surmeier of Emporia; four brothers, Robert and wife, Virginia of Grainfield, Thomas of Oakley, Dave and wife, Kay of Oakley and Charles and wife Kathy of Scott City; three sisters, Rita Wessel of Hays, Maryann Seymour and husband, Raymond of Golden, Colo., and Bernadine Wessel of South Korea; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services are Monday, 10 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Selden with the Rev. Mark Berland officiating. Interment will follow at Selden Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., with vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at Pauls Funeral Home.
