KEARNEY -- Mavis Maureen Petersen, 92, died Tuesday (Jan. 19, 2010) at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

She was born Sept. 29, 1917, at Culbertson the daughter of the late Joseph and Rena (Brown) McNeice. Mavis grew up at Culbertson where she graduated from Culbertson High School in 1935. She was baptized in the Culbertson Presbyterian Church.

On Feb. 20, 1937, she married Raymond Petersen at Oberlin. For several years she worked as a grocery clerk in Wilcox and then moved to Hastings in 1954 where she continued as a grocery clerk. In 1961 she moved to Aurora, Colo., where she worked for Civil Service at Lowry Air Force Base and received several awards for superior performance. In 1979 she retired and moved to Culbertson where she was librarian for ten years. She moved to Kearney in 2004 where she resided at the Regency.

She has been a member of the United Methodist Church since 1979.

She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond on Nov. 7, 1966; her parents; three brothers, Dale McNiece, Jack McNiece and Peter McNiece and two sisters, Iris Gummere and Josephine Petersen.

Mavis is survived by one son, Harlan Petersen and wife, Anita of Hastings; one daughter, Renetta Sims and husband, Gary of Kearney; four grandchildren, Jeff Sims, Rayan Pierro, Angie Foss and Rhonda Wilson; six great-grandchildren, Taylor, Jensen and Elizabeth Foss, Will Wilson, Shawn Capps and Donna Mann; three great-great-granddaughters and two sisters, Eileen Moore of McCook and Jesslyn Stubbs of Culbertson.

Funeral service will be Monday, 2 p.m., at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson. Interment will follow at the Culbertson Cemetery at Culbertson.

Memorials may be given in her name and visitation with casual attire will be Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Herrmann Funeral Chapel in Culbertson.
