MAYWOOD -- Melvin Grant Brown, 90, died Friday (Dec. 4, 2009), at Senior Living Choices assisted living in Curtis.

He was born Oct. 27, 1919, at the Riley Brown Ranch in Southwest Lincoln County to Clyde M. and Esse E. (Stevens) Brown. He spent a few months in Missouri and then returned to Hayes County, where he grew to adulthood on his grandfather Stevens' homestead. He attended country school at Brushy in Frontier County and Valley in Hayes County. He completed the eighth grade and decided to go into ranching and farming.

On Feb. 6, 1941, he married Ellen Russell in Hayes Center. They made their home in rural Hayes County until he purchased the George Easton farm in Frontier County in 1950 where he lived until ill health forced him to move to Senior Living Choices where he resided until his death.

He was a member of the Gideon's and the Maywood Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Janae Lenz; a great-granddaughter, Bridgett Anderson; and a great-grandson, Jake Richardson.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen; daughter, Glenda and husband, Richard Lenz of Curtis; son Gordon and wife, Alice of Maywood; a brother, Mackay Brown and wife, Betty of Maywood; a sister, Marion Hoschouer of Ames, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were today at the Maywood Christian Church with the Rev. Dale Heimer officiating. Burial was at the Maywood Cemetery.
