Jane Alverta Hester died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, at the age of 83.

She was born Jan. 9, 1926, in Beaver City, the daughter of the late Fredrick George and Jewel Troy (Fletcher) Kief. Jane grew up in Gosper and Furnas County, where she received her high school education.

On Dec. 17, 1944, Jane eloped to Norton, Kan., where she married Carl H. Hester. Their families learned of their marriage several months later. They moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, where her husband was stationed in the U.S. Army Air Corp. While in Wichita Falls their daughter, Beverly Jane was born. Following his discharge from the military, they returned to Nebraska and resided at Holdrege where their daughter, Karla Jean was born. Carl worked for the signal department of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad traveling from Denver, Colo., to Chicago, Ill.

In 1953, they moved to McCook, where they spent the remainder of their lives. Jane worked for Hested's and Woolworth's and for 25 years worked for the Chief Motel and Country Corner Market.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl on Oct. 24, 1975, her daughter, Beverly Jane Hester on June 18, 1998 and brother, George Elsworth Kief on April 19, 1944.

Jane is survived by one daughter, Karla Harris and husband, Gary of McCook; two grandchildren, Justin Harris and wife, Kaylynn of McCook and Jamie Stitt and husband, Daniel of Axtell, Neb.; three great-grandchildren, Wyatt Harris, Lane Harris and Allie Stitt; and relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at Herrmann Memorial Chapel in McCook. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.

Memorials may be given in her name and friends may call at Herrmann Funeral Home for 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.
