Irene Cloe Gertson

May 9, 1911 - July 5, 2008

ATWOOD -- Irene Cloe Gertson, 97, died Saturday (July 5, 2008) at Rawlins County Health Center in Atwood.

She was born to William and Agnes Beck Birrer on May 9, 1911, in Atwood. She attended school in Atwood graduating in 1929, and then attended Denver Beauty Academy in Denver, Colo.

On Aug. 6, 1929, she married Delbert O. "Sohn" Cloe of Atwood. She was a homemaker and also a beautician, She worked from her home beauty shop for 50 years. They both made their living with businesses out of their home in Atwood. He died of a heart attack on Nov. 27, 1970, in Atwood.

She married Dr. E.T, Gertson on Jan. 5, 1980. They spent three years together. He died on Aug. 29, 1983. She lived in Atwood, until she entered the Good Samaritan Center on Dec. 29, 2006.

She was a member of the Disciples of Christ Christian Church in Atwood and the PEO for 50 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; and two sisters, Grace Vap and Lucille Scott.

Survivors include her two children, Sonia Jan Domsch of Atwood and Robert O. Cloe and wife, Sheri of Manhattan, Kan.; two step-children, Dr. W.F. Gertson and wife, Jeri of Great Falls, Mont., and Clarice Gertson and husband, Dale Emig of Abilene Kan.; brother, Ivan J. Birrer and wife, Betty of Springfield, Ill.; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; and several other family members and friends.

Funeral services were today at Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Atwood with the Rev. Christine Edwards officiating. Interment will be in the Atwood Fairview Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Irene Cloe Gertson Cosmetology Scholarship Fund for Rawlins County students.
