COZAD -- Jesse L. Carbaugh, 88, formerly of Elwood, died Monday (March 31, 2008) at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.

He was born Jan. 8, 1920, in Gosper County to Johnnie and Daisy (Morgan) Carbaugh. He attended rural Gosper County schools before attending Elwood High school and graduated in 1939. He continued his education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and later graduated from Lincoln School of Commerce.

On May 26, 1945, he married Genevieve L. Prebyl at St. Paul Methodist Church in Lincoln. They lived in Lincoln until 1970, when they moved to Elwood and remained there until 2006. They later moved back to Lincoln and were most recently living in Meadowlark Point in Cozad.

He began his banking career at National Bank of Commerce in Lincoln and continued at First National Bank at Elwood, where he served as executive vice president from 1970 until his retirement in 1985.

He was a member of Optimist Club and Elks Club of Lincoln. In Elwood, he served as president of Elwood Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Lions Club and an honorary member of Elwood Family Career and Community Leaders of American. He helped with the development of the Elwood Care Center and Elwood Senior Center. He was also a member of First United Methodist Church of Elwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, James, Morgan, Edgar and Melvin; and one sister, Luella.

Survivors include his wife, Genevieve L. Carbaugh of Cozad; son, Gary and wife, Renee Carbaugh of Lincoln; daughter, Sharon and husband, Robbie Oelkers of Elwood; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, 1 p.m., at First United Methodist Church in Elwood with the Rev. Connie Karr officiating. Interment will be at Elwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m., at Elwood Funeral Home in Elwood and prior to services at the church on Friday.
