L. Mildred Taylor Cook

PARADISE?VALLEY, Nev. -- L. Mildred Taylor Cook, born Nov. 18, 1917, in Oberlin to Edward and Ola Taylor, died Saturday (June 9, 2007) at the home of her granddaughter in Paradise Valley, Nev.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, parents and brothers, Lloyd, Robert, Leither and Merle "Bill".

She spent her first seven years in Cheyenne Junction, Colo., where her parents farmed. Then the family moved to McCook and then Culbertson, where she attended school, graduating in 1937.

Shortly after graduation, she married Joseph Cook, son of local farmers, Phillip and Elizabeth Liebsack Cook (Koch). The couple raised two sons, Rodney of Granada Hills, Calif., and Thomas of Upland, Calif. They left Nebraska for Southern California along with Joe's parents in 1942, and settled first in West Los Angeles and Englewood and finally in Northridge, Calif.

Their sons, born in 1938, (Rod) and 1940, (Tom), gave them a total of five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mildred was a homemaker, helpmate in her husband's construction and grading business and a talented artist.

Her china painting won many awards and is proudly displayed in the homes of her family and friends. She and Joe enjoyed fishing and travel. They took a trip to Ireland together in 2004.

Since her husband's passing in 2004, she has split her time between her home in Northridge and her granddaughter's ranch in Northern Nevada.

She is survived by her sons, Rod and Tom; daughters-in-law, Barbara and Linda; grandchildren, Kris (Stewart -- Paradise Valley, Nev.), Joe, Kelley (Bell -- Winnemucca, Nev.), Cari and Kathy; and great grandchildren, Michael, Jessica, Melissa, Ashley, Shane, Carly, Patrice, Ethan and Avery. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were Wednesday, June 13, at the Paradise Valley Community Church in Nevada, at noon with a dinner that followed at the local community hall and on Thursday, June 21, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Northridge, Calif., with a reception to follow at her home.

At a later date this summer a portion of she and her late husband's ashes will be scattered over Clear Lake, Calif., a favorite family vacation destination, and the remainder will be interned at the Phillip Cook family plot at the Culbertson cemetery.
