Barbara R. Bortner, 82, died Friday (March 30, 2007), at Community Hospital in McCook.

She was born on April 23, 1924, at McCook, to Fredrick and Barbara (Bauer) Schlecht. She attended McCook High School.

On April 4, 1948, she married Melvin Bortner in McCook. They made their home on a farm north of McCook where she helped with the farm work and was a homemaker.

She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Lutheran Women Missionary League, Red Willow Ladies Extension Club and Good Sam's Club.

She was precded in death by her parents, Frederick and Barbara Schlecht; five brothers, Chris, John, Fred, William and Gustave Schlecht; and four sisters, Mae Carlson, Kathryn Schilz, Betty Christianson and Lydia Dovark.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Melvin Bortner of McCook; son, Bruce Bortner of North Platte; daughter, Cynthia and husband, Larry Ruffner, of Bellevue; two sisters-in-law, Lucile Culp of Chandler, Ariz., and Doris and husband, Everett Mosher, of McCook; four grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews: and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, 10:30 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Brad Rick officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation is Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Sunday, 5-8 p.m., and visitation will continue Monday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m.
