Velma Vernice Jones

BENKELMAN -- Velma Vernice (Teeter) Jones, 90, died Saturday (March 17, 2007) at Sarah Ann Hester Memorial Home in Benkelman

She was born Nov. 12, 1916, at her family's home in Dundy County, to John C. and Nettie C. (Little) Teeter.  She attended country school near her home, at District No. 21, northwest of Benkelman.

On Oct.30, 1934, she married George William "Bill" Jones. They were married for 61 years. They began farming as a young couple for Francis and Lena Edward.  In 1952, the family moved to Benkelman.

They were caregivers for her mother, Nettie, during her final years.  Following her mother's death, she operated Chief Street restaurant.  She was employed by Moses Drug and Hamilton/Reade Drug, Morehouse Hospital and the Dundy County Hospital until her husband's retirement in 1980.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Benkelman, the W.S.C.S., later named the United Methodist Women. 

  She moved to the Sarah Ann Hester Home after her husband death on Nov. 12, 1995. 

Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Nettie Teeter; husband, Bill Jones; two brothers, and one sister. 

She is survived by her sons, W. Dee Jones and wife, Joan of North Platte; Ronnie Jones and wife, Jean of Benkelman; daughters, Charolette Van Cura and husband, Charles of Falcon, Colo.; Dorothy Jesse and husband, Doran of Benkelman; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were today at 1:30 p.m. (MST) at the United Methodist Church in Benkelman, with Rev. Brian Fong officiating. Interment followed services at the Benkelman Cemetery.

Visitation was Sunday from 4-7 p.m. (MST) at Forch Funeral Chapel in Benkelman.

Memorials may be given in her name to the United Methodist Church of Benkelman's carpet and cushions fund.
