OBERLIN -- Phyllis Vavroch, 83, died Thursday (March 30, 2006), at Decatur Health Systems in Oberlin.

She was born April 3, 1922 in Hutchinson, Kan., to Bert and Elsie (Timken) Winkerling and raised in Manhattan, Kan. She graduated from Manhattan High School in 1940 and Kansas State College, majoring in medical technology in 1945.

She married James Henry Vovroch on Nov. 27, 1946 in Manhattan. The family made their home in Custer township southeast of Oberlin. They moved to Oberlin in 1987.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James, on Aug 2, 1996; and two brothers, Leonard and Gordon Weckerling.

Survivors include two sons, Gregory Vavroch of Parkside, Penn., and Larry Vavroch of Melbourne, Fla.; one brother, Maurice and wife, Wilma Weckerling of Topeka; two sisters-in law, Dorene Weckerling of Manhattan and Luella Weckerling of Boulder, Colo.; one granddaughter; and one step-grandson.

Services were Tuesday at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with the Rev. Judy Stricker officiating. Interment will be at the Oberlin Cemetery.

Memorials may be addressed in her name to the American Cancer Society.
