OMAHA -- Mona G. Phelps, 84, died Saturday (Jan. 22, 2005) at her home in Omaha.

Mona obtained her psychiatric social work masters degree in 1957, from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and University of Nebraska at Lincoln combined. She worked 9 years at the Nebraska Psychiatric Institute in Omaha, leaving there in 1966. She then worked as a community consultant at Woodward State Hospital in Woodward, Iowa. She left in 1969 to work for the Association for Retarded Citizens in Linn County, Iowa until retiring in 1985, when she moved to Omaha, where she volunteered at the Adult Intensive Care Unit, and the Geriatric Assessment and The Low Vision Clinic at U.N.M.C.

She was on the board of The Greater Omaha Association for Retarded citizens. She was the president of the Nebraska Advocates for nursing home residents, and was active in the Nebraska State legislature. She was also an active member in The American Association for Mental Deficiency, The American Orthopsychiatric Association and the National Association of Social Workers. She also received a Plaque for serving 3500 hours of volunteer work.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Bertha Phelps; and sisters, Helen Scott and Gale Matson.

Survivors include her brother, Durward and wife, Ruby Phelps of Hebron.

Graveside service are Thursday, 2 p.m., at Trenton Cemetery with Rev. Darwin Scott officiating.

There will be no viewing or visitation.

Memorials may be given in her name to the family and mailed to Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 6330 North 56th Street, Omaha, NE 68104
