Phillip "Demps" Herman, 94, died Tuesday (Sept. 28, 2004) at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

He was born Jan. 5, 1910, to Conrad and Katherine (Preis) Herman in Laub, Russia. In 1912, the family came to the United States and began farming in rural Culbertson. He grew up in Culbertson and graduated from Culbertson High School. He attended college in Naperville, Ill.

On June 21, 1939, he married Lyda Hayek in Trenton. He spent his life farming in Culbertson. He joined the United Methodist Church in 1944. His wife preceded him in death on April 16, 1979. In 1996, he retired from farming and moved to McCook.

He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Culbertson Masonic Lodge where he was a longtime member and the holder of the Jordan medal and the Bethel Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of Culbertson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lyda; four brothers, Conrad, Henry, Peter and Carl Herman; and one sister, Louise Shaffer.

Survivors include his son, Doug Herman and wife, Mary of El Cajon, Calif.; one daughter, Mary Reppert and husband, Steve of Newton, Mass., one sister, Marie Alberts of McCook; and five grandchildren.

Services are Saturday, 10 a.m., at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson with the Rev. Dan Spearow officiating. Interment will be in Culbertson Cemetery with Masonic rites.

Memorials may be given in his name and friends may call Herrmann Funeral Chapel in Culbertson today until 9 p.m. The casket will remain closed.
