SPALDING -- Jean Helen Stevens, 71, passed away April 11, 2004, at the Friendship Villa in Spalding.

She was born in Lynn, Mass., on May 7, 1932, to Charles and Helen (Winslow) Stevens. She grew up in the Boston area.

In 1949, she joined as a member of the Congregation of St. Catherine's, K.Y. She served 19 years with the Dominican sisters as a teacher in Louisiana, Kentucky, Nebraska and West Virginia. She returned to school and earned her medical technologists in 1960 from the Sts. Mary and Elizabeth Hospital School of Medical Technology in Louisville, K.Y. She also belonged to the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. During this time she served in many supervisory capacities in hospitals in Savannah, Ga., and Birmingham, Ala.

She also served as laboratory supervisor at St. Catherine's Hospital in McCook, where many knew her at Sister Helen Bernadette. She then served as the laboratory supervisor in Spalding at the hospital there. In 1975, she moved back to McCook where she worked at Community Hospital until her retirement in May 1997.

Jean touched many lives with her kindness and caring acts. Always ready to give a large part of what she had to help her fellow man. She was frequently volunteering to take someone to a doctor's appointment or drive someone in need of a ride. She was active in St. Patrick's Catholic Church and helped tutor at St. Patrick's School. Children meant a lot to Jean and in the two years preceding her death, she had tutored at the Spalding Academy in Spalding.

She loved the arts and music. She sang in church and at many weddings.

Jean was a humanitarian and one of her favorite charities was the Humane Society and other animal shelters..

She is survived by one brother, William C. Stevens and wife of Leesburg, Fla., and nieces and a nephew. Jean made friends wherever she went and left many behind that will miss her dearly and remember her for the friend she was.
