M. Elaine Burton Bryan

PUEBLO, Colo. --  M. Elaine Burton Bryan died Monday (Feb. 2, 2004) at her home in Pueblo, Colo.

She was born in Bartley. She spent eight grades in a one-room school near her farm home. She graduated from Bartley High School as valedictorian. She attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney, graduating with honors. Her teaching career consisted of teaching English and business for two years at Palisade and four years at Benkelman High School.

In May 1952, she married fellow teacher, Jack Bryan. In 1957, the couple moved to Pueblo where she taught at Central High before becoming a high school counselor. She retired from teaching to travel the world with her husband.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the American Association of University Women, Assistance League and PEO. She held board positions in Delta Kappa Gamma and AAUW. She was board president of Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, AAUW and her PEO chapter. She held various offices in these organizations.

Survivors include her husband, Jack; her brother, Merwyn and wife, Norma; and her sisters-in-law, Donna, Rosalle, Linda and their husbands, Clarence, Bill and Mike.

Services were today in Pueblo at Westminister Presbyterian Church. Local services are Saturday, 10 a.m., at Christian Church in Bartley. Interment will be in Bartley Cemetery.

Visitation is today, 7-9 p.m., at Lockenour-Jones Mortuary in Cambridge.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name to the Pueblo Central High School Foundation Scholarship Fund.

Colorado services were conducted by George McCarthy Funeral Home of Pueblo.

Lockenour-Jones Mortuary of Cambridge is in charge of the local arrangements.
