Lloyd Earl Potthoff

Lloyd Earl Potthoff died Friday (Dec. 12, 2003) at his home in McCook. He was 73 years old.

Lloyd was born on Oct. 17, 1930, in Red Willow County, to Fred and Mabel Estel (Halladay) Potthoff. He graduated from Red Willow County High School in 1948, and later took college classes after his dismissal from the Army.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951, and served during the Korean Conflict in Germany where he was an Information Specialist in the headquarters of the 28th Infantry Division in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1954, but continued to serve in the Reserves.

On Dec. 16, 1951, he married Elvira Mae Walker at Lebanon. To this union five children were born. Lloyd was a farmer for all of his life until his retirement.

He was a 50 year member of Memorial United Methodist Church, Veteran of Foreign Wars, McCook Elks Lodge, member and past-president of Southwest Nebraska Genealogical Society, served on the Board of Education for Red Willow Schools, and was a former Red Willow County Commissioner. In 1965, he was awarded the McCook Junior Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Young Farmer Award for the year. In 1967 he received recognition for tree planting of wind breaks. In his free time he enjoyed travel, hunting fishing and genealogical research.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Fred and Mabel Potthoff; and one brother Wayne Potthoff.

Survivors include his wife, Elvira Potthoff of McCook; three sons, Stephen Potthoff of McCook, Larry Potthoff and wife, Jodi of Hastings, Darrel Potthoff and wife, Joyce and grandsons Adam and Bradford of McCook; two daughters, Marianne Potthoff of McCook and Dr. Sandra and husband, Dr. Craig Tankersley of Littleton, Colo.

Graveside service were Monday, December 15, 2 p.m., at Memorial Park Cemetery with a military committal and the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating.

Visitation was Monday until 1 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the Southwest Nebraska Genealogical Society.
