LINCOLN -- Eleanor E. Smith of Culbertson, 81, died Wednesday (Sept. 24, 2003) at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Lincoln.

She was born Jan. 20, 1922, to Henry and Elizabeth (Rutz) Schlager in McCook. In the fall of 1922, the family moved to Culbertson where Eleanor grew up and graduated from Culbertson High School in 1940.

On June 13, 1941, she married Allan Theodore Smith at St. John's Lutheran Church. The couple spent their married lives in Culbertson.

She was a member of the Ladies Aid Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allan on April 6, 1983; a nephew, Jack Wagner; her parents; three brothers, Henry Schlager, Jake Schlager, LeRoy Schlager; and two sisters, Lydia Alberts and Elizabeth Wagner.

Survivors include by three daughters, Susan Bauer and husband, Richard of Sioux City, Iowa, twins Cynthia Jeffries and husband, Steve of Salcha, Alaska and Catherine Smith of Las Vegas, Nev.; one sister, Maria Turner of Alma, Kan.; and five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services are Monday, 10:30 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Culbertson with the Rev. Bryan Hopfensperger officiating. Interment will be in the Culbertson Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in her name and friends may call Herrmann Funeral Chapel in Culbertson.
