Florence Catherine Unger, 78, died Friday, (March 22, 2002) at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

She was born Aug. 18, 1923 at Herndon to Frank and Anna (Kogl) Weishapl. She graduated from Atwood High School in 1940, and later became a teacher there.

During World War II she worked in Omaha for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers.

On Nov. 8, 1945, she married John F. Unger at Herndon. They moved to McCook in 1948, where they raised their family. They co-owned the A & W Drive-In for many years.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, church choir, Altar Society, Sweet Adeline's, Hospice, Mental Health Association, Hospital Auxiliary, and volunteered for the McCook Pantry.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1998; her parents; sisters, Helen Hauptman and Louise Berger; and four brothers, William, Elmer, Linus, and Francis Weishapl.

Survivors include her nine children, David Unger of Culbertson, Rita Unger of Los Angeles, Calif., Jane Bell of Lincoln, Mary Unger of Lincoln, Anne and husband, Kent Confer of McCook, Rose and husband, Don Lucas of Newman, Calif., Sara Johnson of Champaign, Ill., Lori and husband, Mark Reinke of Fort Collins, Colo., and Judi Alexander of Omaha; one brother, Gerald and wife, Sandy Weishapl of Flagstaff, Ariz.; one sister, Magdeline Skolout of Lees Summit, Mo.; two sister-in-laws, Anna Weishapl and Rosemary Weishapl, both of Atwood; 24 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, 2 p.m., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Revs. Gary Brethour and William Ryland officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.

The rosary will be said Tuesday, 7:30 p.m., at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Visitation is today until 8 p.m., Tuesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Wednesday 9 to 11 a.m.

Memorials may be given in her name.
