Ruby Gladys Steinke

Ruby Gladys Steinke died Monday (July 22, 2002) at McCook Community Hospital. She was 81 years old.

Ruby was born Feb. 7, 1921, to Simon and Minnie (Bornemeier) Brakhage at Alvo, Neb. She attended the University of Nebraska. She worked for the War Department in Washington, DC and on May 27, 1942, she married John Adams Steinke in Los Angeles, Calif. where he was stationed in the Army. Ruby also worked for the Welfare Department in Lincoln, as a clerk at Boeing Aircraft in Portland, Ore. and as a switchboard operator at Burlington Northern Railroad in McCook for 15 years before retiring.

Ruby was a 49 year member of the McCook Memorial United Methodist Church and a long-time member of Red Willow Good Sams Camping Club.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, John on Dec. 1, 1999; brothers, Francis, Raymond, Arthur, George, Charley, and Floyd Brakhage; and sisters, Opal Allison and Pearl Herman.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, John and Kay Steinke of Waukee, Iowa and Jim and Karen Steinke of McCook; four grandchildren, John D. Steinke and wife, Lori, of Indianola, Iowa; Kurt Steinke and wife, Jennifer, of Waukee; Jennifer Robinson and husband, Brad, of Hartsville, S.C. and Keri Steinke of Kearney; three great-grandchildren, Kyler Gartner, Braden Robinson and Karissa Steinke; one brother, Jesse Brakhage of Elmwood; and two sisters, Arlene Brakhage and Hazel Reid both of Lincoln.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral Services will be at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, July 27, 2002, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Thurman officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, McCook.

Visitation will be Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. A private family flower service will be Friday at 7:30 p.m.
