Harrison Everett 'Shorty' Walters

SCHUYLER -- Harrison Everett "Shorty" Walters, 94, died Thursday (Sept. 19, 2002) at the Ambassador Care Center in Lincoln.

He was born July 4, 1908, in Danbury to Marion and Eunice (Townley) Walters. After graduating from Lebanon High School and attending the University of Nebraska, he joined the U.S. Army and served in England during World War II.

On June 23, 1940, he married Wanda LaVonne Warren in McCook. They operated a grocery store and bar until moving to Schuyler in 1955. They owned the Valley Court Motel and he also worked at the Last Chance Bar, Grubbs Grocery Store and later at the Ordinance Plant in Grand Island.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Schuyler and the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Sam; and one sister, Beth.

Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl and husband, Vesi Maae of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Susan and husband, Joel Engel of Schuyler; one sister, Mary Hawlken of Johnstown, Colo.; his former wife, LaVonne of Schuyler; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, 1:30 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church in Schuyler with the Rev. Dana Stout officiating. Burial will be in the Schuyler Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon at the funeral home and from 12:30 p.m. until service time at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Schuyler Senior Center. Kracl Funeral Chapel of Schuyler is in charge of arrangements.
