Steven Charles Horinek

ATWOOD -- Steven Charles Horinek, 88, died Tuesday (April 1, 2003) at the Prairie Living Senior Center in Colby, Kan.

He was born Dec. 22, 1914, to Rudolph Egnac and Agnes (Janousek) Horinek on the family farmstead northwest of Atwood. As a young boy, he attended country school at Queen of Driftwood District No. 96.

On Aug. 24, 1938, he married Frances Pallas at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Deweese. To this union five daughters were born, Theresa, Ramona, Janice, Paulette and Maribeth. The family lived on a farm east of Atwood until he retired from farming in 1981 and moved to Atwood. He entered the Prairie Living Senior Center in Colby in September of 2001.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Catholic Workman No. 74 both of Atwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jim, Rudolph, Lewis, Frank, and Edward; a sister, Elizabeth; and a sister-in-law, Martha F. Horinek.

Survivors include his wife, Frances of Atwood; five daughters, Theresa Kantor of Douglas, Kan., Ramona and husband, Dick McCarty of Oakley, Kan., Janice and husband, Robert Braun of Hays, Kan., Paulette and husband, Frank Miller of Atwood and Maribeth and husband, Wayne McCarty of Hays; a sister, Frances Souchek; a brother, Bernard Hornek; two sisters-in-law, Martha E. Horinek and Antoinette Horinek all of Atwood; 25 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, 10 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atwood with the Rev. Damian Richards as celebrant. Interment will be in the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Atwood.

Memorials may be addressed in his name to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atwood or to the donor's choice.
