Grace Marian (Chessmore) Cables

SHARON SPRINGS, Kan. -- Grace Marian (Chessmore) Cables, 97, died Tuesday (May 20, 2003) at the Greeley County Hospital in Tribune, Kan.

She was born Oct. 1, 1905, at Eagle Grove, Iowa, to Vernon Arthur and Susan Charlotte (Singer) Chessmore. The family moved to Ludell in 1907, where they farmed south of town. She graduated from Rawlins County High School in 1923 where she finished normal training to qualify for a teacher's certificate. After teaching four years in the county schools, she moved to Denver, Colo., where she graduated from Barnes Business College in 1928.

On July 3, 1937, she married Orley L. Cables in Atwood. After her husband's death she moved to California. She enrolled in the University of Colorado at Boulder, Colo., and received her bachelor of science degree in 1942. She volunteered as a dietitian 2nd Lieutenant Reserve Officer and reported for duty at the Air Force Hospital at Jefferson Barracks, Mo. She was later sent to Verdun, France, then Japan, returning to the United States in 1948. She was recalled to the army during the Korean War to serve for 18 months. She retired from the Army-Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1965. She received a masters degree in foods and nutrition and worked for the Veterans Administration as a dietitian from which she retired in 1968.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge No. 331 and had received her 75-year pin. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of Radiant Chapter No. 229.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Orley on Dec. 18, 1938.

Survivors include nieces and nephews, Barbara and husband, Dan Van Laeys of Sharon Springs, Kan., Phyllis Gettys of Tempe, Ariz., Gene Chessmore and wife, Myrna of Long Beach, Calif., Beth and husband, Gerry Reagan of Columbus, Ohio, Peggy and husband, Joe Cabrinha of Atwood and Leonard Chessmore and wife, Darlene of California.

Funeral services will be Friday, 10:30 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Atwood with the Rev. Paul McNall officiating. Burial will be in the Atwood Fairview Cemetery at Atwood with services by the Order of Eastern Star, Radiant Chapter No. 229 of Atwood and military rites by the American Legion, Sam Hubbard Post No. 46 of Atwood.

Visitation is today until 9 p.m. and after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church.

Memorials may be given in her name to the American Cancer Society and left at the funeral home.
