Bernard H. Haag

LEBANON -- Bernard H. Haag, 81, died Sunday (May 25, 2003) at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Cambridge.

He was born Aug. 27, 1921, on a farm north of Lebanon, to Francis A. and Grace M. (Warner) Haag. He graduated from Lebanon High School in 1938. He attended Barns School of Commerce in Denver, Colo., in 1939 and farmed from 1940 to 1942.

He entered the U.S. Army on Sept. 8, 1942. He served in the European Theatre of Combat in Africa, Italy and Yugoslavia. He was an airplane mechanic and performed inspections, maintenance and repairs on military aircraft. He performed major engine changes and repaired and maintained auxiliary equipment. He was discharged in 1945.

On July 23, 1943, he married Nelda May Townley in Dakota City. They farmed south of Bartley.

He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the County Extension Board, an officer in the T-Bone Club and an I&RW Coop Board Officer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, George Haag.

Survivors include his wife, Nelda of Lebanon; one brother, Francis D. Haag of Bartley; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Thursday, 10:30 a.m., at the Lockenour-Jones Mortuary in Cambridge with the Rev. Nick Baker officiating. Interment will be at 2 p.m. at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell with military honors.

Rosary prayer service will be Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home in Cambridge.

Memorials may be given in his name to the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association or the Kidney Foundation and left at the funeral home.
