Dr. Richard 'Dick' Powell

DENVER, Colo. - Dr. Richard "Dick" Powell, 52, died Tuesday (July 8, 2003) at his home in Denver, Colo.

He was born June 4, 1951, to Robert and Verna (Harper) Powell in McCook. He moved with his family to Liberal, Kan., where he attended school and was raised as a member of the First United Methodist Church.  He was an Eagle scout and graduated from Liberal High School in 1969.

He received his master's degree from West Texas University in Canyon City, Texas and went on to receive his doctorate at Indiana University. He was a professor at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, and the University of Colorado in Denver.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Verna Powell-Larsen and Robert Powell.

Survivors include two daughters, Stacie Powell, and Corey Coldiron; a sister, Susan Powell-Robinson; and former wife, Heather Powell.

A private family service will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Stratton.

A teacher education scholarship fund has been established at Texas Tech University in his memory.

Forch Funeral Chapel of Stratton is in charge of arrangements.
