Bison still enjoy only home dual vs. mighty Tigers

McCOOK, Neb. — Not even the monstrous Hastings Tigers wrestling machine could wreck a fun McCook Bison home dual night.
“Some say McCook puts on one of the best home duals in Nebraska,” coach Nick Umscheid said following the 64-6 Tigers victory. “It was a big mismatch, but it’s still a great experience for the wrestlers and our fans.”
Sadly, the bright lights haven’t stop flu bugs from hitting this McCook varsity team. Top wrestlers Alex Anthony and Canyon Hosick both missed the home dual due to illness, Umscheid said.
Hosick had just won the Buzz Matson Invite at Oberlin, Kan., on Saturday while Anthony placed second in his weight class.
Wyatt Felzien still delivered a grand Bison finale Thursday, when he pinned his exhibition match opponent before one period was finished.
“They always say the last match is what everyone remembers,” Umscheid declared. “And we won that one.”
Umscheid also seriously enjoyed how several of his new varsity wrestlers competed.
Beyond Hosick and Anthony, only senior/2019 state qualifier Julian Stiver brought much varsity experience into this season.
“Again, the scores don’t really show it, but our guys are showing a lot more fight than early in the season,” the coach observed. “Hastings is a very good team. Our guys could have rolled over, but they kept fighting.”
Wyatt Meyers went the full six minutes at 145 pounds to follow his varsity win at Oberlin on Saturday.
Jose Campos exchanged power with Zander Lockling at 182 pounds, battling into the final period.
Most other Bison worked through at least one period against one of Class B’s top-ranked dual teams.
The walk-up music for each wrestler and plenty of fans including McCook’s Junior Wrestling Cub added to this only home dual all season.
The Bison now move on to Saturday’s Lexington Invitational, where McCook girls are competing today.
They’ll dual at Colby, Kan., Thursday evening and then host their own dual tournament one week from today at McCook’s Graff Events Center. Results from all varsity matches on the mat Thursday:
