New rates for medical assist calls start in October

McCOOK, Neb. — The City of McCook Fire Department is on track for another record year of emergency calls with a current increase of over 23%. As a result, answering non-emergency type calls is becoming more cost prohibitive and creates the potential for a delayed response to emergency calls while spreading personnel thin.

On Aug.16, 2021, the McCook City Council approved Resolution #2021-13, amending the rates for ambulance service operated by the City of McCook. These adjusted rates will be effective on Oct. 1, 2021. One of the items that was added to the list of billable fees is a lift assist. A lift assist is when an individual calls 911 and is assisted up to a more mobile position from the ground by paramedics, but not treated or brought to hospital for further medical attention. It is not a medical emergency call; it's simply a call for assistance.

The adjusted fee will allow for six (6) calls for a lift assist for each patient or facility. After six calls are received, the department will charge $85 per occurrence after the patient or facility has exhausted six calls per year. The fee would apply only if first responders were to determine there were no medical problems involved.

The hope is that by charging this fee,it will dissuade these non-emergent type assistance calls and encourage the patient to have arrangements made for neighbors or other family members to be able to come assist the patient without taking emergency ambulance and personnel out of service to perform the task. The department understands that this is not always possible and encourages anyone with questions or anyone who is not sure whether an ambulance is needed to call 911 for assistance or call 345-5710 and speak directly with the fire department personnel.
