Bison battle past GICC Crusaders in tourney

KEARNEY, Neb. — McCook’s tennis girls conquered one of their best tourney tests all season, 71-65, over Grand Island Central Catholic at Thursday’s Kearney Catholic Invite.

The Bison fought off this perennial Class B contender thanks to four undefeated efforts again.

Senior Megan Hodgson and junior Joslyn Hammond both went 5-0 through the two singles division.

Hodgson only lost one game to Gering all day with four other 8-0 victories.

Seniors Elsa Wilcox and Olivia Koetter also conquered five No. 1 doubles teams including an 8-0 win over GICC.

In fact, the Bison went 3-1 against those Crusaders.

Seniors Lexi Hauxwell and Emily Kjendal did fall by an 8-3 final. Yet they won their four other matches for more crucial McCook points.

The Bison warmed up to host Saturday’s GNAC tournament on McCook High courts. Those matches should begin at 9:30 a.m.
