CAMBRIDGE, Neb. — Cambridge Trojan alum Catlin Rice knows all about going full speed whether it’s leading the wrestling program or his duties as new head football coach.

Rice applied for an opportunity that he’s thought about since playing football at Peru State.

“I have a love and passion for coaching wrestling,” Rice remarked during a recent interview with McCook-area radio voice Rich Barnett. “But I knew I wanted to coach football, too.”

Last week, he accepted the offer from his alma mater where he’s been an assistant.

“I know what the culture is like, and the kids know me. They know some expectations I have set,” the math, social studies and science teacher explained. “Being on staff here has helped me learn and grow as a coach and human being. I’ve fell in love with the game anymore.”

Rice assumes the football coaching position from Rodney Yates, who’s departing after posting a 19-9 record during these past three seasons. Cambridge finished 4-4 during a challenging 2020 where two games were canceled because of COVID-19.

Rice will continue to coach the Cambridge wrestling team.

“I like to have my plate full and doing a lot,” Rice concluded. “It’s already April, so we have to start planning for summer weight programs and camps. We’re excited to see what happens.”
