McCOOK, Neb. — McCook Community College freshman infielder Zack Beatty of Maple Park, Ill., has been named the Region IX player of the week for Feb. 23-28.

Beatty, the Indians’ first baseman, hit .500 and smacked five home runs to go along with 11 RBIs and 12 runs scored last week.

He was a big reason the Indians plated 53 runs during the week, including an 11-1 win on Sunday against Northeastern Junior College.

He went three-for-six Saturday with two homers and three RBIs, went one-for-three with a homer in Game 1 of a Sunday doubleheader and was three-for-four in Game 2 Sunday with a home run, a double and two RBIs.

Beatty, who smacked a home run on the first pitch he saw as a collegian on Feb. 4, has six home runs through his first 12 games, eighth most in the nation among Division I junior college players.

He is batting .395, with a .469 on-base average, an .884 slugging average and 15 RBIs in 43 at bats.
