RIVERSIDE, Iowa — Noah Hofman rolled along to lower and lower scores throughout his top four finish at the 87th annual Iowa Open PGA tournament last weekend.

Hofman shot 66 on the par-72 Blue Top Ridge golf course which was second behind only an eight-under from Tim O’Neal of Savannah, Ga.

The McCook High two-time Class B state champ gained three strokes on eventual Iowa Open champion Chris Nagel of Wildwood, Mo.

Overall, Hofman shot 71-70-66 to finish nine strokes under par at 207.

He took fourth among 60 pro golfers who made the cut into Sunday’s final round. Nagel (197), O’Neal (201) and Otto Black from Brighton, Mich., (203).

Hofman’s top four place was just one behind his No. 3 finish at the Wyoming Open last month.

Not bad considered the 2016 Bison alum just began PGA golfing this spring after COVID-19 canceled his final collegiate season at Ottawa (Ariz). University. He was ranked No. 1 in NAIA when the season concluded.

Hofman hit nine birdies on Sunday which led all the Iowa Open golfers.

He shot par on 15 other holes while bogeying only three. The entire tourney field hit 231 birdies but bogeyed 217 times.

Hofman moved past Justin Doeden of Prior Lake, Minn., who struggled to 76 on Sunday following Saturday’s 63.

The Iowa Open featured a $25,000 championship prize.

Top pros have played the tourney like two-time champion Zach Johnson.
