McCook alum joins Husker 'virtual' legends Saturday

Friday, April 17, 2020

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska is holding a video game simulation of its Red-White Spring Game on Saturday, featuring dueling lineups of all-time great Cornhuskers.

The 1 p.m. affair, which is set to stream on NU’s Facebook, Instagram and Twitch accounts, will be between the typical Red and White teams.

And yes, McCook native Jeff Kinney will be part of this showdown of Big Red legends.

Let’s take a look at the lineups.

Red Offense vs.

White defense

Can two-time national champ “Touchdown” Tommie Frazier keep Heisman finalist Ndamukong Suh from wrecking his afternoon?

Will 1983 Heisman Trophy winner Mike Rozier run around or through great 1971 defenders like Willie Harper and Outland Trophy winner Rich Glover?

The Red O-line looks stout considering 90s champs Zach Wiegert and Aaron Taylor lineup with Devaney-era legends Bob Brown and Marvin Crenshaw.

Will Frazier find 1984 NFL No. 1 draft choice Irving Fryar open against past pro cornerback Ralph Brown along with safeties Mike Minter and Mike Brown — three more 90s national champs.

Junior Miller also ranks among Nebraska’s best all-time tight ends, moving into the NFL where he teamed with Steve Bartkowski for a lethal 1980s pass-catch combination.

Current Baltimore Raven Sam Koch and former NFL-er Kris Brown make a strong kicking combo.

White offense vs. Red defense

Anchoring White’s line is the Husker who had a national trophy named after him: center Dave Rimington.

Dean Steinkuhler joined Rimington on those awesome early-1980s lines who led the way for Rozier, Fryar and Turner Gill.

Most recent Husker Heisman Eric Crouch runs behind them Saurday along with the great Green Bay Packer Ahman Green and — of course — McCook’s own Kinney.

Johnny Rodgers gives White two Heisman winners while rejoining 1970-71 national champion teammate Darryl White.

All-time leading receiver Stanley Morgan, Jr., joins Rodgers as the wide receiver duo.

Howver, check out that Red team defense: 90s legends Grant Wistrom and Jason Peter besides earlier Outland winners Larry Jacobson and Trev Albers.

Jerry Murtaugh brings more 1970-71 national champion greatness into the linebacker group.

The secondary is “young” with current NFL-ers Nate Gerry and Prince Amakumura.
