The good days: big first weekend of April for area

Friday and Saturday were filled will all sorts of great success when looking back at April 5-6 of 2019, when Corona was known as a mountain in the Super Mario Sunshine video games.

McCook High’s boys were blasting the Broken Bow track-field competition. They scored 143 points to blaze past Kearney Catholic’s Star (90) and Scottsbluff (83) for another team itle.

Seniors Riley Mai (3200 run), Gabe Sehnert (300 hurdles) and Morgan Fawver (long jump) were all winning events along with two Bison relays.

Brandon Tucker and Josh Hegwood both ran legs for those Bison foursomes (1600, 3200).

Meanwhile, the Bison girls reached 11 personal bests en route to winning a highly competitive 10-team title chase.

Yes, 10 teams could once gather in a world where now 10 people are frowned upon due to health concerns.

Senior Jayceea Hanson delivered a double championship (discus, shot put) and classmate Robin Grigg never long jumped farther than 16’8” on this April afternoon.

Coach Brent May’s Bison girls scored just enough points (75.5) to edge O’Neill (68), Kearney Catholic (67) and Cozad (62).

Other notable achievements during this first weekend of April:

Coach Joe Vetrovsky’s Bison golf boys reached the top five among 14 Kearney Invitational teams.

Junior Brady Esch shot 79 to place as McCook started showing why the entire varsity team would eventually qualify for Class B state.

McCook High’s JV tennis girls won 19 of 20 matches to take home the North Platte Invitaitonal title.

The Hitchcock County Falcons featured career bests from Bradyn Hutto (100-hurdles) and Aaron Oberg (shot put) during an annual Rawlins County, Kan., Invitational.

Dionte Perkins added a high jump championship.

Host Rawlins girls raced to second place among all seven teams as Abby Singhateh (shot put) and Amy Crouse (300 hurdles) won events. Hitchcock’s Kyeligh Scott ran her fastest 100-meter dash.
