OMAHA, Neb. — Awesome McCook junior Alec Langan's mission for a state title shot needed one more reversal as he lost 6-5 to Fairbury Jeff Seth Firmanik in their Class 195-pound semifinal Friday evening.

Langan suffered just his third defeat this season (40-3) after pinning two state opponents on Thursday. He appeared ready for a late win Friday night, but Firmanik (46-3) countered with enough points to secure the victory.

Firmanik moves into Saturday's Walk of Champions leading to all the title matches.

Southwest's Matt VanPelt (right) will reach for a higher Class D place at 145 pounds as he takes his 47-4 record into state matches at Omaha on Saturday.

Langan has clinched his second state medal and will begin wrestling for possibly third place Saturday morning. He finished fifth a year ago.

The Gazette area saw four other state semifinalist with Chase County's Trevor Peterson only winning 5-1 over Cole Stokebrand from Amherst in Class C 182-pound action.

Peterson (41-3) now takes his title shot against 53-0 Laithan Duda from Broken Bow.

Southwest's two semifinalists dropped their Class D semifinals Friday night.

Matthew VanPelt was just one point short like Langan, dropping a 5-4 decision to 43-3 Colten Holthus of Garden County. Van Pelt's record slipped to 47-4.

Roughrider teammate Brett Tryon lost a tough 11-5 battle with 46-1 powerhouse Cody Coons from Twin Loup. Tyron's now 41-9 and will join VanPelt's in medal matches Saturday morning.

Arapahoe heavyweight Levi Kerner, a sophomore, lost his Class D semifinal by a 10-4 final count with Overton's Kien Martin (32-1) earning the finals spot.

The five semifinalists and only one other qualifier from 24 have actually advanced into Saturday.

Southern Valley's James Hargett pinned both his consolation foes on Friday at Class D 195 pounds. In fact, neither lasted through the first period as Anselmo-Merna's Justin Miller went down at 1:25 and Jestin Dayer from Howells-Dodge lasted just 47 seconds.

Hargett (25-8) can clinch a state medal with one more win on Saturday.
