McCook High 2018 graduate Kylee Hauxwell (front row, fourth from left) competes with the University of Nebraska Curling Club team which hosted its historic Cornhusker Bonspiel at Lincoln’s Breslow Center last weekend. There were 14 teams including the University of Oklahoma Sooners, Creighton University, University of Minnesota , Denver University, Wisconsin Stevens Point and Wayne State University. It marked the first time collegiate curling has come to Lincoln since Nebraska’s program began in 2007. Nebraska’s team met with the United States Curling Association to make sure the Breslow Center met all national competition standards. Hauxwell is among 26 members of the UNL team with 18 forming Nebraska’s traveling squad. They have placed second, second and fifth at nationals during these past three years, according to the Lincoln Journal-Star. They practice weekly and play regularly against other schools and clubs in Omaha besides traveling to tournaments in other states. Nebraska’s No. 1 team finished second behind only North Dakota State at the Cornhusker Bonspiel after scoring wins over Minnesota and Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The University of Oklahoma were No. 2 division champions. The Gazette hopes to include more details about Hauxwell and this Cornhusker team in an upcoming edition.
