MCC drops first two softball games on Texas trip

SNYDER, Texas – The McCook Community College softball team opened up the season Thursday with a pair of losses to Western Texas College. The Westerners won the opener 19-1 and took the second game 10-3.

In the first game, the Westerners scored in every inning and pounded out 16 hits in the five-inning game.

MCC's lone run came in the fourth inning on a walk, an error, a fielder's choice and another error. The only hit for MCC was a leadoff double by freshman Kristen Mogan, (Richfield, Utah) in the second inning.

Freshman pitcher Melanie Fye, (Ault, Colo.) took the loss and worked 3.1 innings. Sophomore Karleigh Kleinknecht, (Cozad/Gothenburg High School) pitched two-thirds of an inning.

In the second game, Western Texas scored seven runs in the second inning on the way to the 10-3 win.

After pitching a 1-2-3 first inning, the Westerners got to freshman pitcher Anna Wilcox, (Victoria, British Columbia) for four extra-base hits, a walk and three singles in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead and added a run in the third.

Freshman Sidney Sansregret, (Surrey, British Columbia) and freshman Alice Midiri, (Condove, Italy) led off the MCC third with back-to-back singles before sophomore Sarah Willier, (Ponoka, Alberta) delivered a two-out single to make it a 7-1 game.

The Westerners responded with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning and the score remained 8-1 until the MCC sixth when Kaitlyn Kleinknecht doubled and later scored. Sansregret had an RBI-single to close to five runs, but Western Texas got those runs back in the bottom of the inning.

Wilcox went the distance for MCC allowing 10 hits and seven earned runs, walking three and striking out two.

The Lady Indians had eight hits in the second game including three by Willier and two from Kaitlyn Kleinknecht and Sansregret.

The Westerners start their season at 2-0.
