Linda Hein of Lincoln, a native of McCook, and John Hubert, president of the High Plains Historical Society, McCook, puzzle over a campaign poster for Ralph G. “Bunny” Brooks. Why “Bunny”? Neither Linda nor John know … can anyone help answer the question? Call John Tuesday through Friday, afternoons, at the museum, (308) 345-3661. Linda donated the poster to the Museum of the High Plains Saturday afternoon. She purchased it and other Brooks memorabilia at the estate sale of Brooks’ wife Darlene after her death in 1991. Ralph Brooks was born in Eustis and graduated from Sargent High School in 1916. He earned a law degree in 1926 and a masters academic degree in school administration in 1932. Brooks became superintendent of schools in McCook and president of McCook Junior College in 1946. A Democrat, Brooks was elected the 29th governor of Nebraska on Nov. 4, 1958, and he promoted industrial growth, traffic safety and interstate highway construction. While still in office, Brooks died on Sept. 9, 1960. He was 62 years old. He and his wife are buried in Lincoln Memorial Park, in Lincoln, Neb.
