MCC women rebound on road following OT defeat

The McCook Community College Lady Indians basketball team picked up an 87-78 win Saturday against Trinidad State Junior College.

With both teams coming off overtime losses on Friday (MCC to Otero and Trinidad to North Platte), the Lady Indians were able to overcome a 12-point second quarter output, endured a lengthy third-quarter clock malfunction, then fought off a pesky Trojan squad in the late stages of the fourth quarter.

“There was a lot of adversity in this game and this group came out with a lot of energy,” said MCC Coach Brrandon Pritchett. “I’m so proud of how they played today in the second half and the resilience they showed this weekend.”

MCC led 23-17 at the end of the first half but were outscored 23-12 in the second quarter to trail at the half 40-35. After a twenty-plus-minute clock malfunction delay. early in the third period, the Lady Indians went on a spurt to lead 65-54 at the end of three quarters.

“We had a terrible second quarter and didn’t execute. We had the clock trouble in the third quarter, but I think we really refocused at that point and started to execute,” Pritchett said.

All five MCC starters and one bench player scored in double-figures.

Sophomore Makenna Bodette (Colorado Springs) and sophomore transfer Paula Rosello Mateu, (Miles Community College, Mont.) both scored 15 points. Bodette led MCC with 12 rebounds.

Freshman Carla Torrubia Cano (Melilla Spain) scored 14 points and picked up six boards.

Starting freshmen Niamh Kelshaw (Manchester, England) and Amiya Dartest (Jennings, La.) both chipped in 10 points each and frosh Gail Whiting (Montgomery, Ala.) came off the bench with 10 points and nine rebounds.

MCC shot 48.4 percent from the field, made four of 12 shots from the 3-point line (33.3 percent) and made 23 of 34 free throws (67.6 percent)

Trinidad State shot 45.5 percent from the field, made seven of 17 long distance shots (41.2 percent) and was 11 of 18 from the free-throw line.

The Lady Indians out-rebounded Trinidad 39-31, outscored the Trojans 48-38 in the paint and topped the home team in second-chance points 16-5.

The Trojans fall to 3-19 on the season and 0-3 in the south division of Region IX.

The Lady Indians go to 14-5, and 2-2 in south sub-region play.

MCC returns home Wednesday for a home game against the Doane University JVs at 6 p.m. in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.
