Pickers mainly on target with title game

Tuesday, January 14, 2020

McCOOK, Neb. — Guest National Championship game forecasters were mainly correct about No. 1 LSU ending No. 3 Clemson Monday evening.

It wasn’t a slam-dunk pick considering Clemson brought a 29-game win streak into the contest along with two national titles during the past three seasons.

Plus the Tigers took out Big Ten champ Ohio State, a previous 13-0 team considering No. 1 in the nation among many gurus.

Yet Coyote County voice Seth Baumert said “Joe Burrow. Enough said” and that proved accurate as the Heisman Trophy quaterback threw more five touchdown passes Monday night.

LSU trailed early, 17-7, but outscored the mighty Clemson Tigers 35-8 after that for a 42-25 title-clinching win.

Baumert, KICX voice Rich Barnett and Matt Williams — another McCook Bison voice — all took the Tigers along with:

McCook girls basketball coach Amy Scheil;

former Gazette sports editor Grant Strunk;

McCook Community College director of events Jennifer Morgan;

Area sports photo guru Steve Towery;

And of course, Rarely Brilliant Round Belly Headley.

Just missing the pick by taking Clemson:

MHS boys basketball coach Joe Imus;

MHS wrestling coach Nick Umscheid;

former Gazette sports co-editor Gabe Gauthier.

Thanks to everyone who participated.
