HERNDON, Kan. — Clarence Harold (Pete) Lorentz, age 90, of Herndon, passed away at the Emerald Care Center in Cozad, Neb., on Nov. 18, 2019.

He was born in Akron, Colo., on Dec. 31, 1928, to Pete and Anna (Wudtke) Lorentz. He graduated from Herndon High School in 1947.

On Feb. 8, 1951, Clarence enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal before being honorably discharged on Jan. 21, 1955.

Clarence was united in marriage to Evelyn Fay Frick on Oct. 8, 1955, in Herndon. Five children were born to this union. Evelyn preceded him in death on Jan. 12, 2014.

Clarence played semi-pro baseball in the area. One time, when a team from Denver came out to play with a “hotshot” ball player, Clarence struck him out! Later on they found out that the “hotshot” player was Billy Martin who went on to manage the New York Yankees. Clarence also played on area softball teams. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a life member of the Herndon VFW and member of the McCook Elks.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Pete and Anna; wife, Evelyn; sister, Betty and husband, Bob Smith; brother, Marvin; brother-in-law, Jim Rippetoe: in-laws, Arvene and Jackie Frick, Roy (Vernon) and Sue Frick and Kieth Alstrom.

Clarence is survived by two daughters, Sandra and husband, Andrew Green of Herndon, and Sherri and husband, Carl Stouffer of Schoenchen, Kan.; three sons, Rick Lorentz and Janet Haag of McCook, Neb., Rodney and Roger Lorentz, both of Herndon; seven grandchildren; six great- grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Dixie Lorentz of McCook, Dorothy Alstrom of Oberlin, Kan., Hazel Rippetoe of Dell City, Okla., and Elden and Eleanor Odle of Prairie View, Kan.

Memorial services will be at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook on Friday, Nov. 22, 2019, at 2 p.m., with Rev Clark Bates officiating. An inurnment will be planned for a future date by the family in the Herndon Cemetery.
