Unbeaten MCC women win home hoops debut

McCOOK, Neb. — The McCook Community College women roared to a 21-3 first quarter lead and rolled to an 86-37 win in the home opener Monday over the Hastings College JVs.

Eleven of the 12 players suited up scored and 11 of the 12 also had rebounds.

“I thought we came out aggressive in that first quarter and established our offense and defense,” MCC coach Brandon Pritchett said.

Sophomore Makenna Bodette (Colorado Springs) led MCC with 19 points to go along with 12 rebounds.

Freshman Gail Whiting (Montgomery, Ala.) scored 18 points and brought down eight rebounds.Freshman Amiya Dartest (Jennings, La.) scored 13 points.

“It was great to get everyone in again tonight. I really like our depth and anyone on any night can step up and produce for us,” Pritchett said.

Freshman Carla Torrubia Cano (Melilla Spain) scored nine points and had 12 rebounds.

Sophomore transfer Achock Gumwel, (Sydney, Australia/Independence Community College) scored nine points and had four rebounds and redshirt freshman transfer Jessika Espinoza, (El Paso, Texas/Western New Mexico University) had nine rebounds to go along with five points.

The Lady Indians out-rebounded the Tigers 68-33.

MCC shot 50.7 percent from the floor but just four of 21 from the 3-point line (19 percent).

“We have to shoot the ball better. We had open shots all night and we need to knock them down consistently,” Pritchett said.

The Broncos made nine of 66 field goals (13.6 percent) for the game and four of 27 from distance (14.8 percent) and lost 33 turnovers.
