Wednesday, October 30, 2019

LEXINGTON, Neb. — The McCook Bison will try to beat Holdrege a third time and then take their third shot at Lexington in today’s B-7 subdistrict volleyball tournament.

McCook (9-23 record) will meet Holdrege (3-24) at 5:30 p.m. with the winner facing those top-seeded host Minutemaids (12-20) around 7:15 p.m.

Whoever prevails will advance into Saturday’s Class B district finals round.

The Bison swept those Dusters 3-0 in Holdrege on Sept. 10, then won a 2-1 rematch during Holdrege’s invitational on Sept. 28.

However, the Bison lost a 3-1 season opener at Lexington Aug. 29. The Minutemaids later took both sets from McCook in a Bison triangular earlier this month.

McCook brings winning momentum into the B-7 after winning Saturday’s Southwest Conference seventh-place match over Cozad 25-14, 25-15.

Sophomore Addison Randel crushed six kills with only one hitting error while junior Liviya Wier drilled seven kills.

Setter Tiara Matson delivered 18 assists.

Junior Elsa Wilcox and sophomore Peyton Doucet both served a pair of aces.

Doucet’s 10 digs were another reason why the Bison scored their second sweep of Cozad this season.

McCook dropped an earlier 25-18, 25-17 decision to Ainsworth even though Randel served six aces. Matson moved all over the court for 14 digs and 12 assists.

Wier bit the Bulldogs with five kills. Junior Harley Cribbs and Randel clobbered four kills apiece.

The Bison started Saturday’s SWC tourney against Ogallala where those Indians triumphed 25014, 25-17.

Wier’s six kills and five from Randel powered the McCook morning attack.

Ogallala advanced into the SWC finals but lost 25-23, 25-22 to champion Broken Bow.

Minden claimed third place with Gothenburg taking fourth overall.
