NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — Last year’s history has become an annual habit as the McCook Bison tennis boys epeated their GNAC team championship on Saturday.

The Bison went undefeated through two divisions and were on their way to a third until No. 1 player Zion Moyer injured his leg.

More details were provided from GNAC champion coach Matt Wiemers:

Team Standings

1 McCook 25 pts

2 Columbus 17

3 Hastings 14

4 Scottsbluff 13

5 Gering 12

6 North Platte 9

1 Singles-Zion Moyer, 3-2, 2nd Place Medalist

Def L. Power, Hastings 8-1; Def D. Mohr, Scottsbluff 8-1; Def M. Karpf, Gering 8-3; Lost to G. Bergeron, North Platte Injury Default; Lost to A. Kamrath, Columbus Injury Default

“Zion played well in his quest to repeat as 1 singles champion, beating his first three opponents by a combined score of 24-5. He then suffered a leg injury in the closing games with Gering, which caused him the withdraw from the tournament. Up to that point Zion was playing well and looked like a sure match up in the final round for the championship with Columbus. We hope to get Zion back for state in a couple weeks. We will just have to see how his rehab goes. If he is able to return for state, he will enter the state tournament with a 24-5 record, which will be good enough to earn a decent seed. “

2 Singles-Mason Michaelis, 5-0, 1st Place Medalist

Def B. Schram, Hastings 8-1; Def R. Little, Scottsbluff 8-1; Def C. Stone, North Platte 8-1; Def C. Wiehn, Columbus 8-0; Def H. Walker, Gering 8-0

“Mason dominated play, winning 40 games and only giving up threeoverall in his matches. Mason was very consistent and served the ball well. Those two factors were the key elements in his success throughout the day. He has amassed a 28-3 overall record in singles play. With a solid finish to the regular season this up coming week, he can positioned himself for a very nice seed at state.”

1 Doubles-Logan Barenberg/Isaac Hinze, 5-0, 1st Place Medalists

Def D. Dollarhide/T. Davis, Gering 8-0; Def L. Frank/P. Robbins, Scottsbluff 8-3; Def L. Hays/L. Johnson, Hastings Default; Def C. Flyr/A. Larsen, Columbus 8-2; Def Z. Florea/B. Little, North Platte 8-2

“Logan and Isaac knew going into conference they had a great opportunity to dominate play. And they did just that, winning 40 games and giving up 7. Logan’s kick serve was on and that led to some easy volleys for Isaac at the net. They are having a super season and need to focus on finishing the upcoming regular season strong. They currently stand at 26-5 with five matches remaining to play this week. A solid finish will set them up for a top 4 seed at state in a couple weeks.”

2 Doubles-Brandan Eckhardt/Evan Humphrey, 4-1, 2nd Place Medalists

Def D. VunCannon/L. Hastreiter, Columbus 8-6; Def D. Karpf/N. Moreno, Gering 8-1; Lost to J. Narezi/A. Kusek, Hastings 8-4; Def L. Blank/E. Mercer, North Platte 8-2; Def A. Schaff/E. Ramirez 8-5

“It was a good day for Brandan and Evan, as they went 4-1 and earned 2nd place honors. They got a tough test in the opening round against Columbus, but were able to come away with a hard fought 8-6 win. That was a big match to win as it helped establish confidence for the rest of the tournament. I am pleased with the development they are showing, as they are really gelling together. They improve their season record to 15-9 and have a big week ahead.”
