Broncos fight past Vikings, 'Rider runs for 114

BERTRAND, Neb. — Senior Austen Rozelle’s 111 rushing yards and 103 receiving powered a clutch 26-21 Wauneta-Palisade win over Bertrand Friday night.

The Broncos (2-2) evened their record following a tough 24-22 loss at Medicine Valley last week.

Junior quarterback Braxton McKinney stepped up to fire three TD strikes among his 12o passing.

Rozelle caught two touchdowns and a long reception of 47 yards.

He also carried 19 times to those 111 yards along with another score.

Senior Ty Duvel grabbed the other McKinney six-point throw.

The Broncos then blanked Bertrand through their entire fouth quarter to clinch this road win.

Rozelle’s 13 tackles (nine solos) also led the defense followed by sophomore Grant Walker’s seven stops.

Duvel and teammate Trace Bley blasted through blockers for five more solo stops apiece. Bley also delivered the Broncos’ one quarterback sack.

If those heroics weren’t enough, Bley forced a fumble and McKinney blocked one Bertrand kick.

Southwest 6

SUTHERLAND, Neb. — Junior Matt VanPelt rushed for 114 yards and threw a 25-yard touchdown to freshman Hunter Cunnigham for Southwest highlights Friday night.

The Roughriders (0-3) totaled 220 yards against unbeaten Sutherland (3-0).

Sophomore Jacob Kerns gained 29 yards on two pass receptions.

Junior Garrett Latimer grinded to 27 more rushing yards.

VanPelt added nine solo tackles among his team-leading 10 stops.

Both he and Latimer made tackles behind the Sailors’ line. Kerns recovered one Sutherland fumble.

IMPERIAL, Neb. — The Longhorns improved to 2-0 at home and 2-2 overall. They’ve only allowed 20 points total in their last two contests.
