LE MARS, Iowa – The 15th-ranked Ottawa (Ariz.) University men’s golf team opened its season by winning the Northwest Iowa Shootout held on Monday and Tuesday at the Willow Creek Golf Club.

McCook High alum and Class B state champion Noah Hofman shared medalist honors after closing the week at 8-under par 208.

After shooting 72 in the first round, Hofman went 67 and 69 to tie for the top spot.

His second round 67 (-5) is tied for the lowest round of his career and ties the school record for lowest round relative to par.

Hofman led the field of 56 players in par-3 scoring by shooting 1-under over the four holes during the week.

It took an impressive rally from the Spirit to earn the win in a field that featured six ranked teams – including OUAZ – and two teams that are receiving votes in the preseason NAIA poll.

The Spirit were 11 shots behind No. 1 Texas Wesleyan following a 288 first round and then 10 shots back entering Tuesday after they posted a 286 in the second round.

OUAZ completed the comeback with a final round 280 to finish at 854 (-10) to win by two strokes.

The third-round score was the second lowest by any team in the field all week and the fifth-best round in program history.

The Spirit total score of 854 is the third best in team history.

Sam Storey of Morningside also shot 208 (-8) to tie Hofman for medalist honors.
