MCCOOK, Neb. — Even Bison male fans donning painted bikini tops during a 101-degree Thursday had to feel real proud about what they witnessed at the Jaycees Complex.

McCook’s softball girls put on a sweet 16 show requiring only two-and-a-half innings in their long-awaited home debut after nine road contests.

“It was nice to be home and have the crowd we had last night,” coach Jason Cochran declared following the 16-0 Bison victory. “I thought our girls did a nice job of staying focused and winning the pitch all the way through.”

Senior Kori Uerling needed just 45 pitches to finish the shutout win, walking one and striking out two.

“Kori Uerling did a great job in the circle,” Cochran confirmed.

Bison circled the bases plenty whether they were sprinting or walking.

McCook’s first 12 runs were aided by five Duster walks and one hit batter.

Yet Bison also mixed in four big early hits starting with Graci Nelson’s RBI-single sending Carley Peters across home plate.

Seniors Trinity Raburn and Brolin Morgan delivered back-to-back RBI-hits which put McCook ahead 7-zip.

Uerling provided her own great run support when she smashed a two-run double. When Kennedy Walter and Morgan both motored home, the Bison were leading 10-0 with Holdrege still recording only one out.

Miller added one more RBI-hit before the 15-0 first inning was completed.

The Bison still didn’t lose a bit of intensity. Uerling pitched two more innings and McCook did not commit one defensive effort.

Cochran praised a memorable first-inning fielding gem.

With a Duster in scoring position at second, third baseman Miller caught a line drive and threw the perfect strike that doubled that runner off base.

Inning over. Holdrege hopes were also basically finished.

“Nice double play by Ashley,” Cochran said. “It’s nice to be home for awhile.”

The Bison (2-8 record) move into their home invitational on Saturday. A tourney schedule appears at left.

Graci Nelson’s three hits, two runs and two RBIs topped the Bison attack Thursday night.

Senior Candace Coleman scored three runs after reaching base on two walks.

Walter, Peters, senior Kaylin Martin and Abbie Johnson tallied two runs apiece.

Junior Savannah Donovan drove home the 16th and final Bison run with her base hit. Miller, Raburn and Uerling joined Donovan in delivering two RBIs each.

Uerling literally scattered three Duster hits as one arrived in each frame — but nothing more. McCook totaled eight hits as a team against two pitchers.
