National motto

Indianola artist Roxann Owens hand-painted the National Motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," above the Red Willow County county court window in the central lobby of the courthouse over the Memorial Day weekend. During a visit to commissioners in July 2019, Barb Otto of O’Neill said that the U.S. Congress adopted “In God We Trust” as the national motto on July 30, 1956. On Nov. 1, 2011, the U.S. House of Representatives reaffirmed “In God We Trust” as the nation’s official motto and its resolution encourages the placement of the motto in all government buildings and school classrooms. Otto made it her personal mission last year to see that the motto was placed prominently in all 93 of Nebraska's courthouses. Following Otto's visit, commissioners Earl McNutt, Jacque Riener and Steve Downer unanimously adopted a resolution to display the motto and commissioned local artist Owens to create a sign and complete it.
