Curiosity got the best of ye ole scribe so I went to look. Crossing the Platte River on I-80 between Lincoln and Omaha recently it all looked pretty normal. We could see that the water had perhaps been about three feet higher than at present but no damage in sight. Even those river vacation shacks along the west bank didn’t appear to have been flooded. On north past the F-105 mounted on a pylon (I always give a hand salute to honor my friends who flew, and perished, that “Thud” fighter bomber into North Vietnam—my heroes) smoke drifted across the highway. Light colored smoke the smell of weeds burning. No sign of flooding. I expected worse.
