Bison throwers, jumpers reach first at Sidney

SIDNEY, Neb. — McCook’s girls delivered a 1-2 punch in both jumps and throws while finishing fourth among nine Sidney Invitational teams.

“We had a really good day, some nice surprises and very good performances,” coach Brent May proclaimed about the 79-point debut.

Few performed better than McCook’s 1-2 long-jumping duo.

Senior Robin Grigg soared to her all-time best of 16’3 1/4” while junior Brolin Morgan matched this impressive feat with her 15’6” PR.

Meanwhile, senior powerhouses Mackenzie Smith and Jayceea Hanson showed why they dominated the B-6 district last season.

Smith won both the shot put and discus (results below) with Hanson finishing second only to her good friend among shot putters.

Hanson earned a top four discus finish, yet the Bison weren’t finished scoring field-event points.

Savannah Donovan matched her all-time height of 9’ for a pole vaulting top five place.

“Savannah tied her personal record,” May confirmed.

Freshman Peyton Doucet (fifth, 200 meters) continued her success from both basketball and volleyball season.

Steady senior Laurel Schmidt also earned another Bison place in the 100-meter dash (sixth).

Bison relays delivered two more places, including the 400-meter team finishing fourth despite a bad baton exchange.

“We didn’t compete more than a couple of girls in four events,” May concluded. “So as the season progresses, we will score more points as a team.”
